To Restructure or not to Restructure – that is the question!

I read out a chapter of my latest novel at the Writers’ Club yesterday evening. It’s the first time in a while. Back then, I had read out my first two chapters. So although some time has gone by, I decided to keep on from there and read out the third chapter (as opposed to reading what I’m currently working on which is quite a bit later in the novel). And I’m so glad I did.

It doesn’t take much. A thought here. A suggestion there. And suddenly I think, yes, if I ended that chapter with that scene, it would ratchet up the tension for the chapter’s end. And then, what about moving that other bit from there? Not only does it spread out the exposition of the backstory, but it also helps to maintain the tension from the previous chapter.

And suddenly, my novel is just that much better. So is it really a question? No. To Restructure is the answer! At least this time…
